You have planned a trip to Munich in winter? Our Hostel Munich “Rent A Room” wants to equip you with some recommendations on where and how to spend a wonderful winter time in our lovely city. Spoiler alert: The following activities and locations are for both types of people – those enjoying the magical atmosphere winters do provide but also the people who would rather seek some coziness indoors.

Munich ’s winter tollwood

Munich’s winter tollwood is one of the absolute highlights that draws a lot of residents but also tourists to Munich`s Theresienwiese in the winter months. You will find culture in all its facets: Several huge tents and outdoor stalls offer exquisite and often hand-made craftwork as well as sustainable products. Your hunger can be satisfied thanks to a broad variety of delicious food that meets Tollwood’s standards of organic and high food quality. During your stay in Munich in the winter months you can simply stroll along those stalls or be entertained by one of the many amazing live acts. German bands and artists but also internationally known musicians like Lionel Richie or Sunrise Avenue make their way to Munich’s winter festival. But the winter Tollwood is also based on a good and very important cause: Its philosophy centers around the desire to create incentives for a sustainable future. This is mirrored in all areas from the products and food offered at the stalls to the recycling of the produced waste. This festival should be on your bucket list for activities to do in Munich in winter!

rocking the sledge

If Munich was lucky enough to be snow-covered, you might want to consider going tobogganing at one of the various hills and slopes. Amateurs will definitely enjoy the highest “mountain”-top that the Olympiaberg has to offer. With its dreamlike view over Munich and the famous Olympic tower in combination with its steep slope it is the most popular place for tobogganing.
Apart from this visual and action-related highlight you can also enjoy time on your sledge in West- and Ostpark, Messestadt, Luitpoldpark or on the Michaeli-hill in Berg am Laim.

For beginners the tiny hill next to the Monopteros in the famous English Garden might suit perfectly.

magical atmosphere in the English Garden

Besides, this location allows you a fairy-like winter scenery: The English Garden – being one of the largest urban parks in the world – can be explored during a relaxing walk in the tree-lined avenues. Your feet need a break? A romantic carriage ride through the snowy wood-like park area might make you fall in love with the snow-covered nature that this park in Munich presents in the winter months.

Our insider tip: Relax and warm up in a tiny cafè which surprises with a lovely and exceptional concept: Several seats are placed outdoors in which you can exclusively sit with your companions and drink some hot chocolate or hot mulled wine. A café worth visiting during your stay in Munich in cold winters!

local christmas markets

If your trip to Munich in winter happens to be in the pre-christmas time, you should absolutely not miss out on its famous Christmas markets. Whether traditional or unusual, huge and impressive or rather small and plain – with its variety of christmas market choices our city meets every desire. Spend your evenings surrounded by lovely decorated stalls offering delicious christmas pastries, hot mulled wine and craftwork. If you may be spending only one day in Munich in winter, you can easily integrate a visit in your busy sightseeing schedule.

ice skating in the Prinzregentenstadion

What would be a trip to Munich in winter without some ice-skating? Much less fun! The Prinzregentenstadion or Olympia Eisstadion (in the vicinity of the Olympic tower and hill) have several special ice-skating programmes you should consider. On the evenings of Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can ice skate to different music genres and under atmospheric floodlights.

If Munich was blessed with cold temperatures that made its lakes freeze completely, we definitely recommend you to go ice skating on the canal of Nymphenburg. If not possible, you will not regret visiting the Nymphenburg palace. This place in Munich looks magical in winter!

wellness during your trip in Munich in winter

Whoever longs for warmth, coziness and relaxation after a day of sightseeing, can indulge in Munich’s daily spas. What makes you warm up faster than a hot sauna session? A wide range of day spas offering every imaginable kind of massages, thermal baths, steam rooms and so much more. For sure one of the warmest things to do in Munich in winter!

botanic garden

Our suggestion for those looking to avoid the cold and all those longing for warmer temperatures on their trip to Munich in winter: The greenhouses of the Botanic Garden accommodate visitors in a tropical climate and on an impressive area of 4500 square metres. Outside may be the deepest snowfall imaginable – indoors a huge variety of blooming flowers and plants makes you completely forget about this.
The gardens’ special highlight is the butterfly exhibition, which allows visitors to take photographs of themselves amidst freely flying butterflies.

Of course the recommendations mentioned above only present a little selection of things you can do in Munich in winter. But as these suggestions already demonstrate, you will definitely find a huge variety of lovely winter activities that make your trip the perfect winter experience!

Have fun selecting your favorites of these recommendations and have lots of blissful moments on your trip to Munich in winter!

Exploring the streets of Munich or doing some shopping around town left you hungry and thirsty? Our Hostel Munich “Rent A Room” presents its favorite restaurants in Munich, ranging from traditional Bavarian dishes to foreign cuisine, from cozy and relaxed settings to exquisite dining. Among the following recommendations you will surely find your perfect choice to enjoy delicious food of all kinds and needs in an amazing atmosphere.

Café Zeitgeist

This dining spot in the Türkenstraße is both, bar and restaurant in central Munich. Is the place to meet and eat for young people and succeeds to appease one’s hunger and thirst from breakfast until dinner. You find a broad selection of starters, salads and bowls as well as delicious main dishes such as burgers, quesadillas, pasta. Its philosophy centers around good food quality that respects the welfare of animals and is as regional as possible. Definitely worth a visit!

Broeding

Broeding surprises its diners with an innovative concept. They serve a six-course menu which is changed every night. Apart from this exclusive highlight, this restaurant in Munich devoted itself to an exquisite wine selection. Sommeliers choose the wine recommendations that best complement each of the daily dishes.

Little London

This steak restaurant in Munich will delight meat lovers! Little London is a stylish English gourmet dining place that offers a broad selection of steaks with great grill taste. One of their great steak options combined with delicious salads or starch make the perfect meal to satisfy a hungry belly. You can enjoy one or several drinks of their huge selection until early a.m.
But this restaurant in Munich is also suitable for vegetarians and guests with food intolerances. The high quality of food paired with the nice atmosphere and friendly service comes with a bit pricier outcome – but an outcome that is enjoyable from start to its end.

Schwarzreiter Tagesbar und Restaurant

The dining experience at Schwarzreiter in the famous Maximilianstraße might be one that you will never forget. It offers quality, detail and taste on both plate and seating atmosphere.Schwarzreiter is specialized in the creation of Young Bavarian cuisine which entails that each meal will have at least one Bavarian ingredient or method of preparation. The Schwarzreiter restaurant in Munich has even been awarded a Michelin Star, which speaks for itself. Whoever wishes to enjoy their delicious gourmet dishes ranging from Bavarian Spätzle to fish or modern variations of the Kaiserschmarrn, should make reservations.

Max Pett

If you happen to be a vegetarian or vegan, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to stop by at this special restaurant in Munich. Max Pett offers a huge variety of vegan dishes ranging from vegan bowls, soups, burger meat substitutes to veganized local Bavarian food. This is one of the rare places where even vegans can enjoy typical Bavarian specialties like Weißwurst, Käsespätzle and Wiener Schnitzel in Munich. Given that its philosophy is to serve dishes with good food quality and that vegan food often comes with high prices, eating at this one of the restaurants in Munich is a bit more expensive. Whether you enjoy breakfast at Max Pett, lunch or dinner: For people with a vegan lifestyle this turns out to be a piece of heaven served on plates!

Naxos Taverna

Whoever enjoys mediterranean food, should go with the Greek food that is served at this gourmet restaurant in Munich west, Obermenzing. While visiting Bavaria’s beautiful capital Munich, you should definitely spend some time in one of the beautiful parks. Our Hostel Munich would like to introduce to you the best parks in Munich to sunbath at, have picnics in, cycle in or just to soak in the nature.

Parks in Munich – 8 spots, you should not miss

Nymphenburg palace park

Taking a walk in the park of Nymphenburg Palace makes you feel like you’re of royalty yourself. The park consists of basins, fountains, lakes, pavilions and other decorative elements that please and relax the eyes. You can also visit the amazing palace itself and see how the former royalty lived in splendor there. The Nymphenburger Schloss is one of the biggest and most visited palaces in Europe.

Hofgarten

The royal Hofgarten is also worth a visit. It is located next to the popular Residenz Building, the home of former Wittelsbacher rulers. The beautiful Hofgarten pavillon and fountain are famous photo spots and therefore naturally popular amongst tourists.

Westpark

Westpark has got everything a good park should offer: hills, lakes, barbecue areas, benches in the greenery and playgrounds. In the summertime, the popular “Kino, Mond und Sterne” open air cinema shows recent blockbusters. You don’t need to fly a long way to Asia – just visit the Chinese and Japanese gardens in Westpark and you can experience some of the asian flair.

English Garden

The English Garden is the most popular and largest of the parks in Munich. It is even larger than the Central Park in New York. The English Garden is great place for everybody: it has got a calm, idyllic section in the north perfect for relaxing in the sun. But it has also a more lively area in the south, where you can slackline, surf at the Eisbach or enjoy a good beer at the Chinese Tower, the most visited beer garden in Munich.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is home to 14,000 species of plants. The greenhouses with their warm temperatures, tropical flowers and beautiful butterflies are great place to escape cold and rainy weather in fall or winter. A must see for any biologist.

Hirschgarten

If you enjoy cute animals more than exotic plans, the Hirschgarten is the best park in Munich for you. Hirschgarten means deer garden, which indeed it is: here you can watch live deer. Furthermore ist offers a water playground and Munich’s largest beer garden. Also it is one of the parks in Munich, with a very long history. In 1780 Elector of Bavaria Charles Theodore had establishes an animal garden, where about one hundred deer were settled. After some years it has been opened to the public and is since then one the most popular parks in Munich.

Riemer Park

In 1992 the Riem Airport was closed, but the city of Munich wanted to reuse that huge place and decided to implement a new green residential district there in 1995. And so the Riemer Park was born. It has got a little lake and many hills, from where you can go sledding in winter time.

Olympic Park

The Olympic Park is known for its various activities. How about enjoying Munich from above? Ride the elevator to the top of the famous Olympia Tower and take in the sight of our beautiful city. The ,,Kino am Olympiasee’’ is an open air cinema showing you recent blockbusters. The Munich Olympic Walk of Stars along the Olympiasee shows handmarks on the floor’s concrete from world-famous people such as Dalai Lama, David Copperfield or Bon Jovi. At the Olympiapark you can also go deep down into the fascinating underwater world. At Sea Life Aquarium you can experience a variety fish and other animals from rivers, lakes, seas and oceans from around the world.

As you can see, there are a lot beautiful parks in Munich, which are worth being explored. Put them on your bucket list for your next trip to Munich. If you need an accomodation for your stay, we would love to welcome you in our clean, central and cheap hostel.

Planning a trip to Bavaria’s beautiful capital? Our Hostel Munich has prepared some funny and interesting Munich Facts that might interest you.

General Munich Facts

  1. Our city’s name “München’’ originates from the old high German word “Munichen’’, which means “by the monks place”, as the city was founded by monks and first mentioned in 1158.
  2. Munich is not only Bavaria’s capital, but also considered as Germany’s beer capital due to its 21 breweries, 22 beer restaurants and the world-famous Oktoberfest.
  3. One of the most surprising Munich Facts is that Munich does not have skyscrapers, compared to other megacities. Even smaller cities such as Cologne or Düsseldorf sport outstanding Skylines.
